GLOBAL Rhythms

Our AIE performances captivate and inspire audiences of all ages, interests, and abilities with opportunities to experience cultures and traditions from across the globe. Help foster creativity and stimulate imagination in your school community by bringing live music or dance to your school.

Overview

Global Rhythms deepens students’ cultural understanding through the exploration of diverse music and dance traditions, connecting directly with New York State Learning Standards. The Global Rhythms program consists of cultural journeys, a performance coupled with a pre-performance  and a post-performance workshop led by BAC Performing Artists.

Global Rhythms Classroom Workshops:

  • Students explore music-making and participatory performance skills in songwriting or dance.

  • Students critically examine how time, geography, climate, and history influence the culture of traditional music and dance.

  • Students collaborate with performing artists to create original songs and/or dances to perform for their classmates.

  • Students develop new skills, an appreciation for the creative process through freedom of self-expression and interactive learning.

Calpulli Mexican Dance

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company was founded in New York City in 2003 by Artistic Director Alberto Lopez, Myrta Duran, Daniel Jaquez, and Executive Director Juan Castaño. Calpulli’s mission is to celebrate the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage through dance-based programming including live music. To this end, the organization produces professional performances via its touring company, designs arts-in-education programming, and provides low-cost, high-quality arts-in-education programming throughout New York City, most notably its program Calpulli Community. Calpulli aspires to be an entity that is celebrated by its community- while remaining accessible to a broader, mainstream audience- for its high-quality artistic works and also for the integrity of its organization. The name “Calpulli” was chosen for, in the Nahuatl language, it means “family” and “big house.” We are a calpulli of dancers, musicians, and teaching artists.
