Young Traditionalists, Rocking Their Roots: Pete Seeger TRIBUTE Concert

In early 2014, the world lost an important advocate for the power of song: Mr. Pete Seeger. One of his lasting impressions on American culture was his ability to revive traditional folk songs in the minds, and through the mouths, of our everyday lives. This program pays tribute to Mr. Seeger by featuring young Brooklyn singers that are carrying tradition forward in song, many with their own bands, who combine traditional music with contemporary sounds and rhythms. Performers include the Sudanese retro-pop traditionalist Alsarah with her band the NubaTones; the all-woman Mexican mariachi  Flor de Toloache led by Mireya Ramos; Palestinian wedding singer Anas Tabash; American singer of Rwandan and Ugandan descent, Somi; and Sephardic singer Samuel Thomas with his ASEFA.

Brooklyn Arts Council’s The Sweetest Song Festival (TSS), is a month long focus on Brooklyn’s traditional singers and song styles. From April 26 through May 27, The Sweetest Song will present 12 concerts and 8 singing master classes at various Brooklyn venues. The programs will explore a range of singing traditions as practiced and performed in Brooklyn’s immigrant and diaspora communities and engage New Yorkers in a creative, cross-cultural exchange with some of the finest traditional singers living in Brooklyn.
