Sung Among Friends: Intimate Georgian and Yiddish Singing
Informal and at times competitive, Georgian table singing and Yiddish zingerayen exemplify a practice found in many cultures of using the time after a meal to carry on in song.

This intimate concert held around a large table presents the kind of traditional singing shared socially among friends and family. Informal and at times competitive, Georgian table singing, presented by members of the Zekari Georgian Men’s Choir and Yiddish zingerayen, presented by some of the finest proponents of the tradition, including Michael Alpert, Carol Freeman, Sarah Gordon, Esther Gottesman, Janet Leuchter, Jerry Marcus, Ethel Raim, Paula Teitelbaum, and Josh Waletzky, exemplify a practice found in many cultures of using the time after a meal to carry on in song. Fun abounds as individual singers perform and receive the admiration of their friends and kin. Audience members will be welcome to learn and join in. This event is presented by BAC in co-sponsorship with CATCH (Center for Art, Tradition and Cultural Heritage), Center for Traditional Music and Dance, City Lore, and Dancing Crane Georgian Cultural Center.

Brooklyn Arts Council’s The Sweetest Song Festival (TSS), is a month long focus on Brooklyn’s traditional singers and song styles. From April 26 through May 27, The Sweetest Song will present 12 concerts and 8 singing master classes at various Brooklyn venues. The programs will explore a range of singing traditions as practiced and performed in Brooklyn’s immigrant and diaspora communities and engage New Yorkers in a creative, cross-cultural exchange with some of the finest traditional singers living in Brooklyn.
