Singer-to-Singer Master Classes

This series of 8 FREE intensive classes gives New York City singers a chance to learn from master teachers of traditional music, including Eva Salina (Balkan/Eastern European singing), Winston “Jeggae” Hoppie (Guyanese pre-wedding ceremony kweh-kweh), Ethel Raim (Traditional Unaccompanied Yiddish Singing), Jason Poole (Hawaiian traditional hula songs from Molokai), and Shobana Raghavan (South Indian Carnatic devotional and popular). Classes cap at 15 students. These classes are aimed at adult singers and certain of the classes are offered on an advanced only basis.

Brooklyn Arts Council’s The Sweetest Song Festival (TSS), is a month long focus on Brooklyn’s traditional singers and song styles. From April 26 through May 27, The Sweetest Song will present 12 concerts and 8 singing master classes at various Brooklyn venues. The programs will explore a range of singing traditions as practiced and performed in Brooklyn’s immigrant and diaspora communities and engage New Yorkers in a creative, cross-cultural exchange with some of the finest traditional singers living in Brooklyn.
