A fresh take on tradition! This concert features Sudanese-American Alsarah and her band the Nubatones, whose jazz sound makes use of Nubian traditional music as well as French-Moroccan Malika Zarra, an expert in both Berber songs and French Moroccan jazz idioms. Both women create exciting hybrid blends of traditional and contemporary vocal styles of North Africa.
Jazz Women Fusing Forms is part of Brooklyn Arts Council's Half the Sky Festival: Brooklyn Women in Traditional Performance, an unprecedented series of concerts, performances, workshops and symposia highlighting Brooklyn women performing artists, especially those working in traditional art forms.
