BAC Folk Arts will screen two Folk Feet video documentary projects, 'Dancing in Detail: Brooklyn's Traditional Dances in Practice, 2007-2008' which features 16 of the over 200 Brooklyn traditional dancers who have made Folk Feet such a rich and rewarding project since its inception in 2003, and "Folk Feet on Fifth: Neighborhood Dance Traditions of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge," which features social and ceremonial dances of five local cultural communities, in context, danced in-situ.
'Dancing in Detail: Brooklyn's Traditional Dances in Practice, 2007-2008 presents each dancer in a brief interview followed by a close, on-the-body dance demonstration. The video was made to create a record representative of traditional dance forms practiced in Brooklyn in the early 21st century. Think of it as a time capsule document that will be of invaluable help to the dance historian of the 22nd century who is trying to figure out what was going on in Brooklyn 100 years ago. Dancers filmed include:
Chrisafo Madimenos [Bay Ridge]: Greek social dances
Euston James with Nicholas Charles (drummer) [Canarsie]: Trinidadian limbo
Yasser Darwish [Bay Ridge]: Egyptian tannoura
Linda Sarsour [Sunset Park]: Palestinian debka
Nadia Dieudonne with Evan Herterlou (dance partner) [Canarsie]: Haitian konpa
For "Folk Feet on Fifth: Neighborhood Dance Traditions of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge," BAC Folk Arts hit the street to document neighborhood places and people dancing in them as part of Folk Feet on Fifth, a year-long emphasis on traditional dances practiced in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge -- linked by Fifth Avenue from Greenwood Cemetery to the Verrazano. Events shown on location include:
Holy Cross Greek Cultural Festival: Greek dance troupe led by Chrisafo Madimenos (Bay Ridge)
St. Lucia Celebration at the Danish Athletic Club: Swedish Folkdancers of New York (Sunset Park)
Tarboosh Cafe Saturday Night: Levantine debkeh with Jad Lebbos, Salim Ghachan, and friends. (Bay Ridge)
Chinese New Year: Lion Dance with Brooklyn Chinese American Association dance team (Sunset Park)
Mexican Quinceanera Celebration: folklorico and chambelan dances led by members of Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl (Sunset Park-based)
