EXITS

EXITS is an audio-theatrical journey through the Brooklyn neighborhood of Fort Greene. Using physical distance and aural intimacy, EXITS connects audiences with beloved community spaces we’ve departed because of COVID-19 and beyond.

Blending genres and eras, EXITS invites us to consider what we’ve lost, what we’ve missed, what we’re excited to return to and experience anew.

Listeners will experience an aural shadow of BAM’s DanceAfrica Bazaar from the mind of a child; ride the Fulton Street Elevated Rail Line through time, space, love, loss, and healing; explore the longing for human touch from a book’s perspective in Greenlight Bookstore; and tune in to a time-traveling radio show to hear callers who’ve visited one particular block of South Portland Avenue throughout history.

EXITS is created by theater makers Rachel Gita Karp, Deneen Reynolds-Knott, Emerie Snyder, and Dina Vovsi: four artists who first connected early in the pandemic in Fort Greene Park. Read more about them and the many people bringing EXITS to life.

Soundwalk
EXITS begins on the steps of BAM, at the intersection of Lafayette Avenue and Ashland Place. EXITS is best experienced in Fort Greene, on your smartphone, through the magical, geolocation-based app Echoes, listened to through headphones. EXITS exists as both a self-guided soundwalk and a site-specific live performance, available for FREE starting on September 30, 2021.
