To remember and honor the dead on the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) invited the public to create a simple memorial at home, at work, at school or elsewhere. We asked each participant to submit a photo of their memorial to our online exhibition, which can be viewed by scrolling through the slide show or scrolling down the page below.

Immediately following the destruction of the Twin Towers and the loss of nearly 3,000 people working inside them, spontaneous memorials were created at fire houses, police stations, in Union Square, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and elsewhere throughout the city. These modest but expressive memorials offered a place for grieving, for gathering together and communicating with each other. We remember the powerful impression they made, even in their impermanence. In the years since 2001, ephemeral memorials continued to appear at ground zero, acting as placeholders for the permanent memorial’s completion
