This one-of-a-kind joyous Emancipation Day celebration commemorates the end of slavery in New York, providing an alternative Independence Day celebration. Enslaved Africans were emancipated in New York on July 4th, 1827, but due to threats of violence, African Americans in New York City celebrated this important holiday on July 5th instead. This year's celebration includes a discussion focusing on Haiti, a concert with Cody ChesnuTT, and a post-concert film screening. $5 (suggested donation).
Presented by Weeksville Heritage Center with support from BAC.
