Earth Mothering Exhibit Opening

September 08, 2023

6:00pm – 8:00pm

The Gallery at 180 Franklin Avenue

Earth Mothering celebrates acts of nurturance as resistance against political and social destruction. Publicly addressing these concerns, in spring 2023, ART YARD BKLYN (AYB) Co-Director, Meridith McNeal and Brooklyn-based artist, Iviva Olenick, launched a series of Earth Mother/Mother Earth hands-on art-making workshops deepening the AYB theme Planet Earth. Participants aged 11–70 met bi-weekly on zoom and in person to experiment with new art forms while engaging themes of healing. Select works in this exhibit derive from these sessions, and/or were made by AYB participants and Teaching Artists. Earth Mothering also includes artworks by Stitchcraft participants, Olenick’s interdisciplinary, social practice artwork responding to Roe v. Wade’s reversal and climate change. Through virtual and in-person embroidery sessions, Olenick revives the oral narrative networks and handcraft traditions women and people with wombs have relied on for centuries.

The exhibition runs September 8th-October 25th at the Gallery at 180 Franklin Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
