Monica Carrillo Zegarra, M.F.A.,an Afro-Peruvian writer, performer, and human rights advocate, is also founder and former director of LUNDU Center for Afro Peruvian Studies and Advancement. Her most recent book about Afro-Peruvian women's experience of racism and sexism comes after winning a lawsuit against blackface in Peru, and after successfully leading housing initiatives post-earthquake in Peru. Carrillo has been recognized as a global leader by Google Earth, and by The Elders, an organization founded by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Formerly a community organizer at the Queens Museum, Carrillo is the current Regional Director of Latin America of a philanthropic organization that supports grassroots movements, food sovereignty, alternative economies, and climate justice.
