Laurel Eckhert and Natasha Dabney will present and be in conversation with two Brooklyn artists about financial goal setting and tools for tracking personal expenses. Q&A follows.
Laurel Leckert is an independent accountant, bookkeeper, and financial consultant. One of her main gigs is as a small business tax counselor at Brooklyn Coop. The majority of her clients are lower-income freelancers who are artists and activists first, and business owners by accident. She provides low-cost tax preparation and bookkeeping services, as well as ongoing advice about navigating the often confusing worlds of business and taxes.
Natasha Dabney has been counseling individuals towards achieving their financial goals since 2003. Her fields of expertise are in housing and in student loan counseling stemming from work with universities and non-profit organizations in Missouri, California, and New York.
Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union(Brooklyn Coop) is a community credit union serving the Black and brown neighborhoods of Central and Eastern Brooklyn since its founding in 2001. BCoop is a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) with a mission is to further wealth-building, opportunity, and resilience in its communities by offering fair and affordable financial services. In 2007, Brooklyn Coop launched a non-profit affiliate named Grow Brooklyn, offering direct client services that complement BCoop's financial services. GB provides free tax preparation for individuals and families through the VITA program, provides free housing counseling as a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, and low-cost estate administration and end-of-life planning legal services.
