Brooklyn Arts Council invites dynamic, experienced and creative Teaching Artists to apply to our Arts in Education Program for Fall & Spring residencies. We are looking for Teaching Artists in all disciplines.
Our Arts in Education (AIE) programs play a critical role in keeping the arts alive in New York City public schools, at the same time promoting the development of essential academic, communication, and critical thinking skills for some of the area’s most at-risk students.
Teaching Artists are asked to complete this online application. We highly encourage Black, Indigenous, people of color and people who identify as LGBTQIA+ to apply.

Brooklyn Arts Council joins friends at the NYC Business Solutions Center For Brooklyn, TD Bank, the Brooklyn Coop Federal Credit Union, and POWRPLNT to present THRIVE TALKS, a financial literacy and empowerment initiative to build capacity and sustainability in the cultural sector through webinar presentations and small group seminars led by our partners. Post-presentation seminars featuring Brooklyn artists and cultural entrepreneurs ground these conversations and center artists’ experiences and questions on topics that range from business financing; building a website; developing a business plan, to customizing systems for personal and business bookkeeping; income tax; self-employment tax; business expenses for freelancers; and choosing a bank or credit union.

“Grounds” is a new performance fusing devised theater, opera, immersive installations, and site-specific art that intervenes in public space. Experimental director Jennifer Williams and International Contemporary Ensemble, both based in South Brooklyn, team up to create this interactive public ritual of healing for the South Brooklyn community. Retelling New York’s history through an inclusive feminist lens, this environmental opera installation illuminates female-identifying history-makers from Brooklyn, including Shirley Chisholm, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Emily Warren Roebling.

“ROSAette” is a collaboration between traditional vocal group ROSA and Renata Skobo, choreographer and performer. “ROSAette” is a multidisciplinary and multicultural performance, created and performed by female artists from four different countries, spanning three continents. Inspired by Balkan culture and tradition, performed by women of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, this piece addresses the very human struggle of being "stuck" and "in-between" in physical spaces, our bodies and our minds. A feeling we have collectively experienced during this global health crisis. Bringing the clash of epochs with a common thread that connects them - the captivity from once visible, and now invisible intruder; this piece is the interplay of struggle, defiance and, at the end, resilience as the inevitable stages of confinement.

Gowanus Open Studios, aka GOS, is a free annual weekend event that takes place in October. Artists in the Gowanus neighborhood (and slightly beyond) open their studio doors and welcome the public to view art, meet the artists, learn about the process of art-making, and get a glimpse of the life of artists. GOS is an amazing art exhibit and so much more. It is an important opportunity for the Gowanus community to rally around the artists and creativity and energy that makes this area so vibrant.
David Kutz: “The Machine in the Garden”

A public presentation of “The Machine in the Garden” that will be included in the Arts Gowanus Open Studio event.
The title of this project is a nod to a 1964 book by Leo Marx. His influential thesis considers why the American Pastoral ideal remains a cultural symbol even after massive industrial growth. Marx points to moments in American literature when the American Pastoral landscape is disturbed by a potent symbol of The Machine, the steam powered locomotive.

The Native New York exhibition encompasses twelve places in present-day New York, covering pre–Revolutionary War exchanges through contemporary events. From Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) ironworkers who helped build Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers to Lenape (Delaware) teens visiting their ancestral home, stories of Native New Yorkers provide an expanded understanding of the region’s history and reveal that New York is—and always has been—a Native place.

YoungArts identifies the most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary and performing arts, and provides them with creative and professional development opportunities throughout their careers.
Artists ages 15–18, or grades 10–12, in the U.S. are encouraged to apply in the discipline of their choice. They could receive: cash awards; mentorship by accomplished artists; a lifetime of creative and professional support; a peer network of distinguished artists; nomination for U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; and/or national recognition.

Baryshnikov Arts Center Open Spring 2022

BAC Open is a four-week residency designed to support the creative process by providing artists with resources to develop ideas, projects, and collaborations. The program offers a pressure-free environment for artists, who are encouraged to focus on their current priorities without the expectation of delivering a finished work. The BAC Open format, which hosts multiple residencies concurrently in BAC’s studio spaces, provides opportunities for artists across disciplines to meet and exchange ideas. BAC Open concludes in a day of voluntary public studio showings.

Made possible by the generous support of the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, the purpose of the 2021-2022 residency program is to expand opportunities for dancers with disabilities, including spinal cord injury (SCI) and other impairments, and to advance accessibility and equity for disabled dance artists within the larger dance, residency, and presenting communities. Dance/NYC will award residencies to up to ten (10) disabled dance artists and/or integrated dance companies.

Smack Mellon's Exhibition & Artist studio Programs
Smack Mellon's Exhibition Program is at the center of the organization. Designed to advance public interest in the visual arts, the program focuses on providing opportunities for artists to create site-specific works that creatively respond to our space, and work that explores innovative uses of both new technologies and traditional materials.
The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis in availability of affordable workspace for artists living and working in New York City. This program provides free studio space; access to a workshop for metal; wood and general fabrication; a common area equipped with the latest technology; and a fellowship (dependent on funding) to six artists for an eleven-month period.
apexart NYC Open call

Apexart is accepting exhibition proposals for its NYC Open Call from October 1–31, 2021. Five winning proposals will become apexart exhibitions presented at apexart’s NYC space as part of its 2020-21 exhibition season. Curators, artists, writers, and creative individuals, regardless of experience level or location, are invited to submit a proposal online.

CCNSF aims to build the capacity of New York City nonprofits in recognition of the fact that organizations led by people of the community are best equipped to meet the needs of the community. CCNSF is also intended to promote learning among CBO leaders. This initiative supports capacity building; strengthening and rescuing of nonprofit human service providers that serve communities of color including, Muslim and Immigrant communities; and community outreach. Grants may be used for projects related to financial management; leadership development; technology; facilitated collaborations and merger planning; and outcomes.
Circle for justice Innovations 2021 SOS Fund

The Strategic Opportunities Support Fund (SOS Fund) is a rapid response funding mechanism that issues micro-grants to organizations addressing crises with strategic organizing and advocacy to meet emergency needs in their communities. The CJI SOS Fund also enables organizations to take advantage of unanticipated opportunities for organizing and advocacy that may be otherwise prohibitive due to a small funding gap.

Impact 100 NYC, an all-women philanthropic giving circle dedicated to transforming New York City communities through lasting impact, has announced the opening of its 2022 grant application cycle for eligible nonprofits. The all-volunteer organization annually bestows an Innovation Grant of $100,000 to at least one nonprofit operating within the five boroughs of NYC for the benefit of city residents and communities.
The Catapult Development Grant

Catapult gives early support to propel projects forward that hold the promise of a story that should be uniquely told in film. We provide development funding, up to $20,000, to documentary filmmakers who have a strong story to tell, have secured access, and are ready to create a fundraising piece to help unlock critical production funding.
NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre

The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre provides grants to encourage and support the creation of digital, film, music, television, and live or online theatre content that reflects the voices and perspectives of all who identify as women. In 2021/22 cycle, the Women’s Fund will distribute $2.5M in funding to Media, Music and Theatre projects in NYC.
The fund is administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) in partnership with the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME).
The Recharge New Surrealist Prize

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is proud to announce the creation of the Recharge New Surrealist Prize, a $7,000 award for painters living in the United States and U.S. Territories who are working in the New Surrealist style. The award program, formerly known as the Recharge Foundation Fellowship for New Surrealist Art, will be administered by NYFA with funding provided by the Gu Family of the Recharge Foundation.
Frameline Completion Fund

The Frameline Completion Fund provides grants to emerging and established filmmakers. This program seeks to provide a much-needed source of financial contributions to artists who often struggle to secure funding to complete their works. Grants up to $5,000 are available for the completion of films that represent and reflect LGBTQ+ life in all its complexity and richness.
Café Royal Cultural Foundation Grants

The Café Royal Cultural Foundation is delighted to announce our expansion to New York City. Since 2007 the foundation, based in Hamburg, Germany, has supported and fostered talented artists of all kinds, enabling them to enhance their craft and realize their artistic vision. Café Royal Cultural Foundation NYC is now offering grants for artists in NYC. The awards are established to support and encourage artists residing in New York City who are currently working in music, visual arts, performance and literature.
Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant PRogram

The $800 million COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program provides grant funding to small and micro businesses and for-profit independent arts and cultural organizations impacted by the pandemic. The grants will be flexible and can be used for a number of different business operating expenses, including payroll, rent or mortgage payments, taxes, utilities, PPE or other business expenses incurred between March 1, 2020 and April 1, 2021.

En Foco Photography Fellowship 2022

En Foco is highly regarded for its leadership in support of photographers of color and for its advocacy role in addressing the issues related to cultural equity and access.
The 7th annual En Foco Photography Fellowship is designed to support photographers of color who demonstrate the highest quality of work as determined by a photography panel of peers and industry professionals. The Photography Fellowship Program will: Award ten fellowships at $1,000 per; include fellows in a 2022 group exhibition; feature the fellows in the 2022 Nueva Luz publication printed and online editions; and provide professional development and networking opportunities.

Americans for the Arts’ COVID-19 impact SURVEY
Deadline: October 15
Americans for the Arts has created a new short survey about the impact of COVID-19 on the employment of artists and creative workers. It will provide crucial info about employment and government assistance for artists and creative workers. The findings will be published by the end of the year and will inform ongoing advocacy for support of arts workers. Please support advocacy for arts and culture workers by taking five-ten minutes to complete the survey.
