In BAC’s Wellness Studio Blog, we invite you to share the passion we have for healing arts, and show how you can use featured Brooklyn traditions from our global diasporas to nurture and heal your body, community, and soul.

Today’s featured organization: Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy

Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy is a leading Brooklyn-based organization that prescribes intergenerational connections and cultural preservation for community wellness.

Ifetayo hosts an open conversation with their Council of Elders and the Ifetayo Youth Ensemble on the topic: What hurts? What helps? Healing through Sharing and Hearing. Facilitated within concentric circles and preceded by libation, the conversation becomes a threshold where brave new visions are emboldened by ancestral values of community. A presentation, The Legacy and Symbology of the Ring Shout and practice of a Community Ring Shout, facilitated by Dr. Angela Fatou Gittens, embodies the same intersection where heirlooms of memory, power, and liberation grow.

Ifetayo offers African-centered, multi-disciplinary arts & cultural education, and wrap-around support for the whole family. They offer classes and workshops that are free or priced affordably to ensure access for all.

Ifetayo offers six major programs serving over 2,000 students and their families annually. Each student’s talents are celebrated to provide an enriching learning experience. Our programs are carefully designed to promote self-awareness, inner growth, knowledge of African culture, the meaning of community, and the importance of respecting and loving one another.

These installations continue Brooklyn's legacy of self-determination by allowing each featured artist to define "healing" in the terms of their own culture and practice.
